Biography
Luiz Joaquim Castelo Branco Carvalho is a plant physiologist with concentration in plant biochemist focusing on metabolism, particularly involving carbohydrate, proteins and vitamins. His research group has combined biochemical, molecular biological and genomics approaches to study biosynthetic pathways in natural genetic variation in plants, especially cassava storage root. This has included determining the sub cellular location of the enzymes and their structure-function relationships, and the role of metabolites in regulation of gene expression. The knowledge gained from these studies is now being exploited using synthetic biology approaches, genomic assisted breeding and new utilization of natural starch from cassava storage root for metabolic engineering of high value products in plants for bioenergy products. In parallel, Carvalhos group was responsible for the discovery of mutants in the starch biosynthesis pathway and recognition of carotenoid-protein complex with specific protein responsible for -carotene sequestration in chromoplast of non-photosynthetic tissue. This is providing insights into researcher communities on natural enhancement of protein content in storage root of cassava, a non-photosynthetic carotenoid accumulate plant.

Shahid Ullah received his Ph.D in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), China in july 2016. He has two years experience as a postdoctoral in the Institute of Low-dimensional Materials Genome Initiative, College of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, Guangdong, 518060, P. R. China, Currently he is in United States of America, he kept making effort to promote his capacity to scientific research in term of philosophy, methodology, knowledge and computational skill. He remained engaged in many government funded projects mainly focusing on PTM based computational studies. Through these projects, he have mastered a lot of computational skills, including collecting and sorting experimental data, extracting and analyzing pathway of data and developing database and tool by Perl and Java programing language, his main contribution to scientific community is developing a comprehensive phosphorylation site database (dbPAF) containing phosphorylated proteins with their modification sites in human, mouse, rat, fruit fly, nematode and yeast. dbPAF, is superior in both the number of p-sites and proteins in all the databases of the world and he has further studied circadian related genes and their relationship with post translation modification (PTMs).
